Multiscale synchrotron microtomography imaging of kerogen lenses in organic-rich shales from the Norwegian Continental Shelf

چکیده

Kerogen lens shape and size distribution control how organic-rich shales may behave as either source or seal rocks. Prior to thermal conversion, kerogen is a brittle, load-bearing constituent of the shale matrix. During maturation, lenses become more ductile, hydrocarbon expulsion lead creation microfractures, process controlled not only by temperature pressure but also their total content in rock. Here, we use high-resolution multiscale synchrotron microtomography imaging centimeter-scale rock samples collected two boreholes at different depths North Sea Barents Sea, respectively. From these three-dimensional data, quantify various shapes discuss each step lens's life-cycle (i.e. original biological structure, deposition, degradation, diagenesis) impacted its before catagenesis. We relationship between volume number given volume. The organic carbon (TOC) average measured. For volume, results show that increases with up point (~8–12 wt% TOC) above which TOC continues increase, decreases. These combined orientation microfracturing during maturation.

Multiscale Gas Transport in Shales With Local Kerogen Heterogeneities

On the basis of microand mesoscale investigations, a new mathematical formulation is introduced in detail to investigate multiscale gas-transport phenomena in organic-rich-shale core samples. The formulation includes dual-porosity continua, where shale permeability is associated with inorganic matrix with relatively large irregularly shaped pores and fractures, whereas molecular phenomena (diff...

Drilling Productivity on the Norwegian Continental Shelf

Recently, we have seen falling oil prices combined with sticky costs at a high level in the petroleum industry. This cause cost cuts and project postponements, thus challenging reserve replacement of oil companies and security of supply for consumers. Costs are particularly high for drilling. High rig rates are obviously important. In new contracts for high-spec semi rigs on the Norwegian Conti...

Pyrolytic and spectroscopic study of a sulphur-rich kerogen from the ``Kashpir oil shales'' (Upper Jurassic, Russian platform)

The kerogen of an organic-rich sample, termed f top, from the Gorodische section (Russian platform) was studied using a combination of microscopic, spectroscopic and pyrolytic methods so as to examine its chemical structure, source organisms and formation pathway(s). This kerogen, which is mainly composed of orange gel-like, nanoscopically amorphous organic matter, exhibits a relatively high al...

Elephant teeth from the atlantic continental shelf.

Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, anz relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.
